John McRae, was a poet, a medic, a veteran of the Boer War, and a Canadian. He wrote "In Flanders Fields" while on the lines of WW I. It was published in a magazine titled, "Punch" in December of 1918.
It encompassed what he saw as he tended to the sick, wounded and dying. It has become a major component of the Remembrance Day process and is a very poignant piece of work.
